Barcelona Cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa Eulalia

Hostal Mare Nostrum wants to talk today about one of the most important monuments of Barcelona: the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia. La Catedral de Santa Cruz y Santa Eulalia, is the Gothic Cathedral of Barcelona and is the see of the Archbishop of Catalunya. Its history brings us back to the thirteenth century, during the reign of James II. The work began in May 1298 and lasted approximately 150 years, although construction of the facade is from the early nineteenth century. Initially it was not intended to build a whole new cathedral but the first decision was to remodel the existing one. Is for this reason that is built above the old Romanesque cathedral, which can still be seen the remains at the Museum of History of the City of Barceona. It has been declared a Cultural, and National Historic-Artistic Monument since 1929. This religious building is dedicated to the memory of Santa Eulalia, patroness of the city (commonly we celebrate the festival of La Mercè as being the patron saint, but in fact this is the patroness of the diocese). Santa Eulalia was a young maiden whom tortured after confessing his Christian beliefs. It is said that was publicly exposed naked in the middle of spring and mysteriously began to snow covering his body, while he grew his hair to preserve your privacy. Infuriated the Roman authorities they locked her in a barrel full of broken glass, nails and knives in the wood, and was cast by today called Baixada de Santa Eulalia (the slope of Santa Eulalia), among the other twelve tortures inflicted by each one of the thirteen years she had. That is why the Gothic cloister has a peculiarity about the other cathedrals: It is home of a thirteen white geese (it is said Santa Eulalia used to herd geese in her village in the outskirts of the city).
