Around the Hostal
The creation of the Plaza Real was in 1822, when was planned to refurbish the convent of Santa Madrona. But the idea did not take shape until the burning of convents in 1835. Then was arranged a contest to find the best project and submited Josep Oriol Mestres and Francesc Daniel Molina i Casamajó. During the contest was used as a theater and was called the Teatre Nou. The possibility of quitting as a theater was an idea that was raised at first, but rejected at the creation of the Teatre Liceo. In 1848 came out the draft of Francesc Daniel Molina i Casamajó.
The Plaza Real is bordering on Rambla dels Caputxins, Ferran street, Calle Colon and Escudellers street and is one of the places with more distinction, being the unique in the city surrounded by arcades. As it became popular more diversified audience appeared in the square, so now you can find everything, from fine restaurants to discos and the most important Jazz local of the city (Jamboree), in front of it the weekends collectors meet and exchange coins and stamps. It is also one of the recurring stages of BAM music festival and concerts of Mercè festival.
In the center of the square there is a fountain called “Tres Gràcies”(Three Graces). On top of street lamps around the fountain can see a winged helmet with a sinuous dragon. This was the first work that the city ordered to the genius Antoni Gaudí.
